Dr.Hauken in Egypt - March 2011
The following picture gallery is taken from my last visit to Egypt, in March 2011.
At this time I was practically speaking the only tourist in the country, due to the revolution that took place from January 25. onwards.
This trip started and ended in Cairo, two weeks were spent in Luxor (as usual every year), and we drove through the oasis of Al Kharga to Al Minya in order to see Amarna and Beni Hasan. All this happened under heavy police- and military escort, times were far from as safe and quiet as might appear. My faithful factotum (taxi driver, interpreter, photographer and bodyguard) Saber was with me every day during the entire expedition. Without him nothing of all this would have been realized.
Back in Cairo we found time to visit more pyramids than those we had seen on arrival. One of the joys of being in Cairo is, of course, the bookshops of The American University in Cairo and the venerable Lehner and Landrock down town, they also have a shop in the great bazaar (the shop at the Sphinx entrance to the Giza pyramids which carries their name does so illegally...).
A special feature of this trip was the fact that due to lack of central government (the army was in control) the practice of opening closed tombs and the permission to take photos was granted liberally. - God bless the revolution!
There are always so many new places to discover in Egypt and in this respect we had good luck all the way - except in Hieracompolis, here we were driven out by rather aggressive guards and chose to leave the premises as fast as the car allowed.
